North Shore Man Charged With Criminal Transmission of HIV

Police say individuals who had sexual contact with the man face a “health risk”

A Wilmette man has been charged with knowingly transmitting HIV, Skokie police announced Monday.

Jimmy Amutavi, 46, of Wilmette, was charged with criminal transmission of HIV after an investigation “regarding events which occurred in Skokie” as far back as July, police said in a news release.

Police say individuals who had sexual contact with Amutavi face a “health risk” and should seek medical attention “without delay,” as well as contact Skokie police detectives by calling 847-98205900.

Amutavi is a personal trainer, according to the Chicago Tribune, who allegedly transmitted HIV to three women he dated. He had been diagnosed as far back as December 2001, the newspaper reported.

Amutavi was ordered held in lieu of $150,000 Saturday and barred from having contact with any of the victims by a Cook County Circuit Court judge, according to the Tribune.

The paper also reported that Amutavi’s attorney said all three women were clients of Amutavi’s, that he has a 5-year-old son and has been taking medication that would make it near impossible to transmit HIV to the women.
