Cops: Masked Men Point Gun at Woman in Attempted Wilmette Carjacking

Neighbors searching for lost dog heard woman's screams, police warn of similar robberies

Two men in ski masks pointed a handgun at a north suburban woman Monday night and demanded her car keys and purse in an attempted carjacking, police said Tuesday.

The woman, 30, pulled into her driveway in Wilmette about 8:50 p.m. in the 400 block of Sandy Lane when the two men approached her and one pointed a handgun at her and threatened to shoot her, Wilmette Police said in a news release. When the woman began to scream, police said, the men fled in a silver or white Toyota Camry eastbound on Wilmette Avenue.

A group of neighbors who were looking for a lost dog on the block heard the woman's screams.

"I was running around the neighborhood with a bunch of other people," neighbor Marius Bruja said. "We were looking for a lost dog named Daisy."

Police said a group of young men with gang ties have been stealing from cars all summer long in different suburbs and have recently upgraded to carjacking and robbery.

"This is a good neighborhood and the bad guys know it too," Bruja said. "It's a blessing she got away with everything intact, especially at gunpoint.
