Man Seriously Injured Jumping from Burning House

Garfield Park townhome destroyed by fire, displacing five adults and six children

A man was injured after jumping from the second floor of a burning townhome Wednesday evening in the West Side Garfield Park neighborhood.

The fire happened about 5:30 p.m. in a two-story townhome in the 2600 block of West Wilcox Street, said fire department spokesman Joe Roccasalva.

A man in his 30s jumped from the second floor of the building to escape the blaze and was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, Roccasalva said.

No one else was injured and the fire was controlled by 6 p.m., he said.

The townhome was destroyed by the fire and five adults and six children have been displaced, Roccasalva said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation Wednesday night.
