Person Dies After Car Plunges Into Lake Michigan: Cops

Crews attempting to rescue the driver, Chicago Fire officials say

A person is dead after a car plunged into Lake Michigan near Navy Pier on Friday afternoon.

The victim was removed from the water and was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to fire officials. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

The Chicago police department's Marine Unit responded to the incident around 5:30 p.m. after a vehicle entered the water. Rescue boats could be seen in the water just north of the pier, and divers eventually reached the vehicle.

According to officials, poor visibility hampered the search and rescue operation, and rescuers had difficulty breaking the windows on the vehicle during the search.

The circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.
