Gym Teacher Slept With Teenage Student: Cops

Wesley Cerniak has no prior record, is married and has a young child

Wesley Cherniak wasn't hired for this type of physical education.

The former gym teacher at St. Benedict's High School was charged Thursday with criminal sexual assault after a student said he had sex with her once a week for several months last year.

The former student, who was 17 at the time of the alleged encounters, told her parents and police that she and Cherniak had sex at motels, at her house and in his car, according to Assistant State's Attorney Kathleen Muldoon.  The crimes may have begun as early as Feb. 15, 2009.

Motel and phone records seem to corroborate the allegations, and DNA evidence taken from the victim's clothing matches Cherniak.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that a Facebook page of a person named Wesley Cherniak with an office listed at St. Benedict High School indicated he taught anatomy and health and played rugby.  The profile has since been removed.

Cherniak, 32, has no prior record, is married and has a 6-month-old child.  His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 24.
