7-Year-Old Brings Gun to School

A 7-year-old Kankakee primary school student brought an unloaded gun to school earlier this week, police and school officials said.

The student did not use the weapon in a threatening manner, and the Kankakee police were immediately informed, according to a release from the Kankakee superintendent of schools that was sent home to parents on Wednesday, two days after the incident.

Taft principal Michelle Keiser confiscated gun after another student told her it was in the student's book bag.

"The safety of our students and staff remains of utmost importance to us," Supt. Colleen Legge said in a statement. "We believe that every student deserves a safe, orderly and nurturing environment and we will continue to direct our efforts toward that belief."

Police are still uncertain where the student got the gun, the Daily Journal reported.
