Swim Ban Temporarily Issued for All Chicago Beaches

A swim ban took effect at all Chicago beaches on Sunday after severe storms pummeled the area Saturday night, according to the Chicago Park District.

The Chicago Park District tweeted news of the ban around 10 a.m. Sunday, saying that the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago was forced to open to lock at Wilmette and the Chicago River due to heavy rainfall.

When this occurs, according to the Park District, the swim ban remains in effect until test results show low levels of bacteria in the water. During the ban, the beaches remain open for use. [[388044802, C]]

Shortly before 5 p.m., the swim ban was lifted, according to the park district.

Heavy rainfall caused massive flooding throughout the area, covering roads largely in the northern suburbs.

I-94 was shut down twice in suburban Northfield due to flooding, according to the Illinois State Police. All lanes were closed near Winnetka Road as several people stood on their cars waiting for assistance from rescue crews.

Chicago saw 2.34 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service, while the surrounding area saw up to 4.25 inches.
