Cops scoured an upscale suburb after a 28-year-old house sitter was shot Thursday during an attempted burglary prompting nearby schools to go on lockdown, officials said.
St. Charles police said the man was related to the owner of the home where the shooting occurred in the 3600 block of Grandview Court. The victim called police and told them he’d been shot, police said. His injury was not considered life-threatening and he was conscious and breathing when officers arrived.
School district officials sent an email saying the suspect was related to a burglary that occurred around 2:30 p.m. St. Charles High School was placed on soft lockdown and “any students who is on campus is safe in the building,” district officials said.
“As a safety measure, officers requested that the area schools be put into lockdown status. St. Charles North High School had already been dismissed for the day but all outside activities and sports practices were moved inside,” police said. “In addition, Wildrose Elementary and Ferson Creek Elementary held the school busses that would drop off in the area of the incident. Officers were stationed at the schools to assist as needed.”
Police gave the all clear for the high school and two middle schools to dismiss students and lift the lockdowns.
Police said no one else was home at the time of the shooting and that a backdoor’s window was broken out.
