SIU Official: No Shots Fired in University Building

Officials reported possible shots fired at Lawson Hall, but they later said there was only evidence of an altercation

A report of "possible shots fired" at Southern Illinois University on Friday evening prompted the evacuation of a building on the north side of campus, but officials later said they could find no indication of gunfire.

Lawson Hall, at 609 Wham Dr. on the Carbondale campus, was cordoned off shortly after 9 p.m. after campus police sent an alert via Twitter of an "emergency" and "possible armed gunman."

"Evacuate area immediately,"  the message said

Officials shortly before 11:30 p.m. said the area was secured and that the hall had reopened.

"Normal operations resumed. Police continue to investigate," they said

Evidence shows there was a fight or altercation at Lawson Hall, but there were no shots fired, according to Rae Goldsmith, a communications officer at the university.
