Teen Charged in Shooting at Suburban Gas Station

An 18-year-old man has been charged in connection with a shooting at a southwest suburban gas station Thursday night.

Carson K. Banasiak, of the 5800 block of 107th Court Way in Chicago Ridge, was charged with one count of aggravated battery, Oak Lawn police said in a statement Saturday.

At around 9:42 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the Citgo gas station in the 9800 block of S. Cicero Ave. in Oak Lawn for a call of an armed subject, authorities said.

Upon arrival, police said they found a juvenile that had been shot in the leg. The victim, whose age and gender were not available, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with an injury that was thought to be non-life threatening.

Witnesses at the scene told officers that the shooter had fled the area, leaving the weapon at the scene, according to police.

Authorities said officers found and identified Banasiak as the offender a short time later, taking him into custody.

According to police, an investigation revealed that Banasiak brought the gun to the gas station, where he and the victim were involved in a physical altercation and struggled for the weapon, during which the juvenile was shot.

He remains in Cook County Jail after he was ordered held on $100,000 bond Saturday, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office.

Banasiak is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
