Bland Family Attorney Asks for Forensic Review of Dashcam Video

Suburban woman Sandra Bland was arrested in Texas on July 10 and found hanged to death in a jail cell three days later

The family attorney for Sandra Bland called for a forensic investigation of a dashcam video showing the traffic stop that led to her arrest following allegations that the video was edited.

Cannon Lambert, the family attorney, spoke at a press conference Wednesday in suburban Chicago, saying he could not tell if the video had been "tampered with." After reviewing it, he said he would need a forensic investigator to examine it.

"(Sandy is) speaking, saying, 'Find the truth, find the answers,'" Lambert said. "We want the answers, and Sandy demands them. And we will find them."

Lambert appeared alongside members of Bland's family, including her sister, at DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in suburban Lisle, where Bland's funeral services will take place.

Earlier Wednesday, Texas officials said the 52-minute video was not edited, blaming a "technical issue during posting" for the irregularities in the video.

Despite the irregularities, Lambert said, "right out of the gate you see from the dashcam that this could have easily been avoided."

Sharon Cooper, Bland's sister, also spoke at the press conference, saying that after reviewing the video herself, she believes the officer who arrested Bland was "picking on her." She also said she believes he pulled her over because she had out-of-state license plates.

Following discussion of the dashcam video, Lambert reiterated the family's belief that Bland did not commit suicide in the Waller County, Texas, jail cell, where she was found hanged three days after her arrest July 10.

"She was a social activist. Social activists don't take their own lives, particularly in jail," Lambert said.
