Four other people were taken to area hospitals with non life-threatening injuries, police said.
A 13-year-old boy died and four other people were injured in a Saturday night rollover crash near northwest suburban Hanover Park.
The teen was killed after the GMC Safari he was in ended up in a ditch after traveling west on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway near Lake Street in Hanover Park around 6 p.m., according to Illinois State Police Elgin District Master Sgt. Chris Melvin.
As the van rolled, the teen was thrown from the backseat and then crushed by the vehicle as it rolled into the ditch, Melvin said.
The boy was dead on the scene, and four other occupants in the van were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, Melvin said. The teen's mother was driving the van.
The van passed another vehicle on the expressway before it lost control, Melvin said. It was unknown if weather, drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, which remained under investigation Saturday night.
