District Fires Coach Who Penned Racy Book

Bryan Craig bills his book, It's Her Fault, as a relationship manual

Rich Township High School District 227 board members on Tuesday evening voted to fire a former girls' basketball coach and guidance counselor who penned a graphic book about women and relationships.

Bryan Craig stepped down as coach but remained on administrative leave last month while officials looked into the impact of his self-published book, It's Her Fault.

The school board voted 6-0 to fire Craig, according to a statement from the board’s president, Betty Owens.

"Mr. Craig’s conduct in this matter fell far short of our expectations and evoked outrage for me, members of this board and many others in our district who have come to expect the highest level of professionalism and sound judgment from the people they entrust with their children each day,” Owens said in the statement.

Craig's attorney told the Chicago Tribune his client believed the action, while expected, went against his First Amendment rights.

The former coach billed the book as an an advice manual for relationships, but critics say it encouraged promiscuity and exploitative sexual behavior.

"Even though I feel I’m beyond the highest caliber of men, I still have a weakness for cleavage," he wrote in one passage.

Craig can appeal the board's decision to the Illinois State Board of Education.
