Bears Miss Out on Signing Highly-Touted Quarterback: Reports

The Chicago Bears made a roster move on Wednesday when they signed quarterback David Fales back onto the active roster, but according to multiple reports, the team was actually planning on going in a different direction to address their needs at the position.

According to reports from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Bears actually tried to sign quarterback Jake Rudock off of the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. Rudock, a sixth round draft pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, was then signed by the Lions onto their active roster, thus preventing the Bears from making the transaction.

During the preseason, Rudock made a big impact on the field for the Lions, throwing for 333 yards and four touchdowns in limited work. Dan Orlovsky still won the back-up job with the team, but it’s fair to say that he could have a chance to make the roster next season given how intent the Lions seem to be on keeping him.

As for the Bears, they ended up going with Fales instead, as he was with the team over the last two seasons. He ended up signing onto the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad earlier this year (likely at the behest of former Bears head coach Marc Trestman), but when the Bears needed another quarterback for their roster, they signed him and Baltimore did not prevent the transaction from taking place.
