15 Students Face Expulsion for Cafeteria Fight

Monday melee in Proviso West High School school cafeteria prompts police response

Fifteen Proviso West High School students were suspended this week and face expulsion following a big fights on campus on Monday.

District officials said school security contacted Hillside police at about 10:30 a.m. that day regarding a fight in the school cafeteria.

Video posted to YouTube on Monday is purportedly from that fight.

"This was a bunch of pushing and punching. It was a very typical high school fight," said Hillside Police Chief Joseph Lukaszek.

That incident was "quickly contained," school officials said, and 15 students were immediately arrested and suspended from school.

Contrary to other media reports, Lukaszek said no students were arrested Tuesday. He said there was a verbal altercation between two students but that no arrests were made in that incident.

No injuries were reported following either fight, authorities said.

"The school is safe and it remains safe," district spokesman Rob Daniel said in a statement. "School dismissal was without incident yesterday, and there have been no incidents today."

Videos of other incidents at Proviso West have also made their way online.
