Teen Used Hammer to Kill Parents: Police

The teen charged with killing his parents over the weekend used a hammer to bludgeon them to death, police said Wednesday.

The bodies of John Granat, 44, and Maria Granat, 42, were found in bedroom of their Palos Park home on Sunday morning. An autopsy determined John Granat suffered blunt force trauma to the head, while Maria Granat suffered blunt force trauma to the head and was repeatedly stabbed.

Citing sources, both the Chicago Tribune and the Southtown Star reported that the couple's son, John Granat, was upset because his father had discovered and destroyed marijuana plants the Stagg High School senior was growing in the home.

Authorities said the younger Granat attacked his parents while they slept and then ran out of the house to call 911, telling the dispatcher he found his parents dead after an apparent robbery.

Granat has been charged with two courts of first-degree murder and is being held without bail at the Cook County Jail.
