1 Dead, 6 Wounded in Weekend Gun Violence

A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed Friday night in the South Deering neighborhood

A 15-year-old boy was killed and at least six others were wounded in shootings across the city since Friday night.

The fatal shooting occurred Friday night in the South Deering neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.

Deon Gilbert was walking in the 10400 block of South Bensley about 10:45 p.m. when a dark-colored minivan pulled up and the driver shot him in the abdomen, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Gilbert, of the 8100 block of South Evans, was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he later died, authorities said.

The most recent non-fatal shooting happened Saturday morning in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. A 17-year-old boy was standing outside in the 5600 block of South Ashland at 10:20 a.m. when a gold-colored car drove up and one of its occupants fired at him, police said. The boy was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

Earlier Saturday morning, a man was critically wounded in the West Side Austin neighborhood. A 40-year-old man was shot three times in the abdomen at about 5:50 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Fulton, police said.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said.

A 19-year-old man was shot early Saturday in the West Englewood neighborhood.

The man was shot in the abdomen at about 3 a.m. in the 5800 block of South Ada, police said. The man was walking when a vehicle pulled up and someone exited and opened fire.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.

About one hour earlier, a person was shot Saturday in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The male – whose age was not immediately known – was shot in the buttocks at about 1:40 a.m. in the 2400 block of South Washtenaw, police said, citing preliminary information.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, but his condition was not available.

On Friday night, an 18-year-old man was shot in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

The man was sitting in a parked vehicle about 9:10 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Ada when someone walked up and opened fire, striking the man in the arm, police said.

Police said the man then drove away and stopped near 71st Street and Loomis Boulevard, where he called the police.

He was then taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

The weekend’s first shooting happened Friday night in the South Deering neighborhood.

At about 7:45 p.m., a 25-year-old man was driving in the 1800 block of East 95th when someone in another vehicle fired shots at his vehicle, police said.

Police said the man was shot in the chest, arm and back and then crashed his vehicle in the 700 block of East 95th, which is when police were called.

He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
