Off-Duty Chicago Cop Carjacked on West Side

An off-duty Chicago police officer was the victim of an attempted carjacking Friday morning in the city’s Ashburn neighborhood.

The incident occurred just before 9 a.m. in the 3700 block of West 79th Street, according to police. An unknown person pulled open the passenger side door of the officer’s vehicle, produced a handgun, and ordered the officer out of the car.

The officer exited vehicle, told the carjacker that he was a police officer, and pulled out his weapon. Shots were fired during the altercation, and the alleged thief fled on foot to an awaiting vehicle, according to police.

No one was injured, and no one is in custody at this time, according to police.
