Firefighters Battle Intense Blaze in Suburban New Lenox

Firefighters in suburban New Lenox are battling a blaze at an industrial building Saturday, officials confirmed.

The blaze, located in the 20000 block of Amhurst Court in New Lenox, is sending flames and smoke billowing into the air.

Eastbound Interstate 80 was closed for several hours Saturday night after the inferno sparked brush fires along the highway, officials said. The lanes were reopened at approximately 9 p.m.

According to New Lenox fire officials, the fire started just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. When firefighters arrived at the scene, two buildings were on fire, and first responders went into a "defensive approach" to battle the inferno, officials said.

One building is a complete loss, and the other building has suffered significant damage. Firefighters are still trying to put out the blaze in the second building, officials said.

Multiple agencies are still on scene, and Will County Hazardous Materials teams are on scene to make sure run-off from the fire is contained.

There is no official word on the cause of the blaze, or whether anyone is currently inside the structure.

We’ll update this story with more details as they become available.
