12 of Chicago's 50 Aldermen Will Be New to City Council

Some were elected in contentious runoff battles or surprising upsets, others are filling a seat vacated by a retirement

When Chicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot is inaugurated Monday, all 50 Chicago aldermen will take their oath of office as well, and there will be plenty of new faces being sworn in.

Twelve of Chicago's 50 aldermen will be new to City Council come Monday, some elected in contentious runoff battles or surprising upsets, others filling a seat vacated by a retirement.

They will take office as the City Council as a whole jockeys with Lightfoot - who has never before held elected office - for a balance of power between the two. The new City Council is diverse and progressive, with six aldermen members of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Several of the new members will also be replacing aldermen with decades of experience. Alds. Pat O'Connor, Joe Moore and Ricardo Muñoz alone have a combined 90 years in office, leaving a major power vaccuum on City Council.

Below is a full list of Chicago aldermen to be sworn in Monday, alongside a note if they are new or returning to City Hall.
