Son Charged With Killing Mother in Bolingbrook Home

Shirley Marzo was found dead in the bathroom with multiple stab wounds to her back, authorities say

A 23-year-old man has been charged with murdering his mother Friday afternoon at her Bolingbrook home, police said early Saturday.

Michael L. Marzo, 23, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, Bolingbrook police Lt. Michael Rompa said.

Marzo is accused of murdering his 52-year-old mother, Shirley M. Marzo.

Officers responded about 3:45 p.m. Friday to a domestic trouble call at 513 Nassau Ave. in Bolingbrook when the woman’s daughter said her mother was dead, Rompa said.

Shirley Marzo was pronounced dead at her home at 5:20 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office, which will perform an autopsy later Saturday.

Police found the woman dead in the bathroom with multiple stab wounds to her back. A preliminary investigation determined she had a domestic dispute with her son, Rompa said.

After an extensive search -- happening at the same time as authorities were hunting for an escaped convict -- Michael Marzo was found in Chenoa, about 80 miles southwest of Bolingbrook, Rompa said.

The final cause and manner of death is pending autopsy, toxicological and police reports, the coroner’s office said.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
