For the first time in the history of the agency, Metra says that riders can use all of their trains for free throughout this weekend.
According to Metra officials, train rides in all zones will be free of charge on Feb. 16 and 17.
The decision was made in the wake of numerous service interruptions caused by a brutal cold snap in late January. That cold canceled train service on the agency’s Electric Line for five days, and the line operated with a limited schedule for another week after service was finally restored.
Cold weather caused overhead power wires to be damaged, and a freight train derailment knocked out a power substation along the line.
The agency also says that it will operate a normal weekday schedule on all of its lines on President’s Day, rather than a limited holiday schedule. Weekend family fare pricing will also be extended through Monday so riders can get cheaper rides.
