Record-Tying Heat Hits Chicago Sunday

The temperature hit 97 degrees at O'Hare, according to the National Weather Service

Memorial Day weekend has brought oppressively high temperatures to the Chicago area, and Sunday was a history-making day in the Windy City.

According to the National Weather Service, the mercury officially topped out at 97 degrees at O’Hare International Airport on Sunday, tying an all-time record for the date.

The temperature was so high at O’Hare that it is actually the second-hottest temperature ever recorded in Chicago in the month of May, the NWS said. The only hotter day ever recorded in the month came all the way back on May 31, 1934, when the mercury hit a staggering 98 degrees.

The high temperature is also the highest that has been recorded in Chicago since all the way back in 2012, when the high on July 25, 2012 reached 99 degrees.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, relief isn’t in sight any time soon. The high on Memorial Day is forecasted to hit 93 degrees, and Tuesday temperatures will remain in the 90’s. A slight cooldown is on the way toward the end of the week, with thunderstorms possible and a high of 81 forecasted for Friday.
