Pair Charged in Fatal Melrose Park Shooting

Maricela Vera was shot during a robbery in her own garage on Wednesday, police said

Two men were charged Friday in connection with the shooting death of a woman three days earlier.

Marquis Byrd, 26, of the 2100 block of 16th Avenue, in Broadview, and Jeffrey Cooper, 18, of the 1800 block of 15th Avenue, in Melrose Park, were each charged with three counts of first degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated vehicular hijacking, authorities said.

The pair were reportedly arrested in the 1800 block of North 21st Avenue, where officers were responding to a call of shots fired and found the victim, Maricela Vera, in her garage.

The woman's daughter, Jackson Vera, said her father and 12-year-old brother heard shots fired from the garage, ran out and found her.

Vera was taken to Gottlieb Hospital where she later died.
