An Edgewater man on Monday was charged with multiple felonies after police said they found nearly 50 marijuana plants growing in his apartment.

Brian Mayhall, 39, was charged with one count of production of cannabis plants and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, police said. Both are felonies.

Authorities said the bust in the apartment building on the 5700 block of North Winthrop Avenue happened Sunday by officers acting on a tip. Responding officers said they discovered "a strong smell of cannabis emanating from the apartment" and saw several plants when Mayhall opened his apartment door.

Forty-nine plants and various lights, fans and grow tents were seized, police said. They estimated the street value of the pot at about $350,000.
