Man Injured, Severely Burned in East Chicago Explosion

A man was taken to a local hospital after suffering severe burns during a house fire and explosion in East Chicago on Saturday morning.

According to the Times of Northwest Indiana, the explosion occurred in the 3900 block of Evergreen Street just before 10 a.m. Fire Chief Anthony Serna told reporters that the south wall of the home had collapsed due to the explosion, and that the home was on fire when crews arrived.

Firefighters found a man on the scene with severe burns to nearly 60 percent of his body, according to the NWI Times. The person was conscious when they arrived at the hospital, but his current condition is unknown.

Crews are still investigating the cause of the fire.
