Man Dies, Boy Rescued from Pool in South Suburban Condominium Complex

61-year-old Reginald Holiday died after jumping into the pool to save his grandson, according to witnesses

One man has died and a child was hospitalized after being pulled out of a swimming pool at a south suburban condominium complex on Wednesday.

Around 1 p.m., authorities responded to the Manor Condominium complex in the 3200 block of N Manor Drive in Lansing, according to Lansing Public Information Officer Fabian Newman.

A man and a boy were rescued from a pool inside the private complex and taken to area hospitals, Newman said.

The man, later identified as 61-year-old Reginald Holiday, was pronounced dead around 2 p.m. at Franciscan Hospital in Munster, according to the Lake County Coroner. The coroner has not released Holiday's official cause of death.

Holiday lived at the complex, officials said, while a relative told NBC5 the boy is his 10-year-old grandson visiting from Texas on his summer break. The relative also said he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and expected to recover.

Two witnesses told NBC5 they helped pull the boy from the water, and one neighbor said the boy's grandfather was attempting to save him during the incident.

"The kid couldn't swim and somehow ended up in the deep end, and then grandfather jumped in and tried to save him but ended up drowning himself," said neighbor Jake Defelice. "He was a big guy and they couldn't pull him out of the pool."

The pool is private, and does not have any lifeguards on duty.
