Ride-Share Services Offer Refunds to Passengers After CTA Accident Caused Rates to Soar

Popular ride-share companies Lyft and Uber will refund passengers who were charged higher-than-normal prices Tuesday after a CTA accident shut down rail traffic on three different lines, the companies announced in separate statements Thursday.

“We’re in the process of refunding passengers who experienced higher than normal prices as a result of this tragic incident,” a Lyft spokesman said in a statement. “We encourage anyone who experienced a higher price who has not already received a refund to contact us immediately.”

Train service was halted on the CTA Red, Brown, and Purple lines Tuesday after a man was found dead on the tracks at the Fullerton station.

Service remained halted for more than three hours, leaving thousands of riders stranded.

"Every transportation rider, public and private, has a role to play in keeping our communities moving," an Uber spokesperson said in a statement. "While we took steps to help mitigate the impact on commuters as soon as we learned of the CTA stoppage, we have issued refunds to riders who experienced higher-than-average prices in the affected areas."

In response to the CTA shutdown, many train riders looked to ride-share companies to get downtown, with some paying as much as $100 for a trip, according to social media posts.
