Indians Beat Cubs 6-0, Lead World Series 1-0

The Cleveland Indians got great pitching out of Corey Kluber and two home runs out of Roberto Perez as they beat the Chicago Cubs 6-0 in Game 1 of the World Series.

The Cubs may have been hoping to get off to a hot start in the game, but those hopes were dashed early. Dexter Fowler and Kris Bryant both struck out looking in their at-bats, and then Anthony Rizzo popped out to end the inning and leave the Cubs off the board in the first.

Things went from bad to worse in the bottom of the frame as the Indians scored a pair of runs to seize an early lead. Francisco Lindor grounded a single up the middle with two outs in the inning, and after a pair of walks, Jose Ramirez hit an infield single to make it a 1-0 game.

On the next batter, Jon Lester hit former Cubs farmhand Brandon Guyer, and the Indians seized a 2-0 advantage early on.

Ben Zobrist led off the second inning with a double, but the Cubs couldn't capitalize. All three hitters, including Kyle Schwarber, struck out in order to end the inning, leaving Kluber in control and the Cubs trailing by two runs.

Lester got into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the third inning as he allowed a two-out single and walk, but he too was able to settle down and get the final out as he struck out Guyer to end the frame.

Schwarber was stranded in the top of the fourth inning after he socked a double and Javier Baez flew out, and the Indians took advantage. Roberto Perez cracked a line drive that barely cleared the left field wall to give the Indians a 3-0 edge in the game.

The Cubs forced Kluber out of the game by getting a runner on base to start the top of the seventh, and Andrew Miller managed to get the Indians out of a bases loaded, no outs jam. He induced a pop-out from Willson Contreras for the first out and then struck out Addison Russell and David Ross to end the threat.

Miller got himself into a jam in the eighth inning, but he once again pitched himself out of it. With runners on first and third and two outs, Miller struck out Schwarber swinging to end the frame and leave the Indians three outs away from taking a 1-0 series lead.

That goal came into much sharper focus in the bottom of the frame as the Indians extended their lead. For the second time in the game, Perez blasted a home run, this one a moonshot over the left field wall to put the Indians ahead by a commanding 6-0 margin.

The Cubs were unable to mount a comeback in the ninth inning, and the Indians grabbed a series lead.

The Cubs will look to bounce back on WEdnesday night when Jake Arrieta takes the hill in Game 2 of the series. The game begins at 6:08 p.m., and will air on Fox.
