Quarry, USGS Officials Meet to Discuss Nov. 4 Tremor

Nov. 4 tremor registered as a 3.2 magnitude event on seismologists' instruments

The owners of a west suburban quarry connected to last week's seismic event were scheduled to meet Wednesday with scientists with the United States Geological Survey in Denver.

Officials haven't been able to pinpoint the cause of the mysterious 3.2 magnitude shaking felt throughout the region.

The owners of Hanson Material Service Corporation, one of two companies that operate out of Federal Quarry in McCook, confirmed they conducted a blast on Nov. 4 but said they didn't believe that was connected to the sizeable tremor felt seven seconds later.

Jeff Sieg, a spokesman with the quarry, said officials were going through data to try to better understand the blasts and determine if any changes need to be made.

Among the data they're reviewing are logs kept by LaGrange resident Linda Lauterbach, who began keeping track in June of the shaking. She and her husband, Dick, recently described to MySuburbanLife.com what they called a "double shock," -- a rumble followed by a boom.

"I'm very suspicious about those because they're definitely different than some of the other ones we've had," Lauterbach said.

She shared her notes, complete with dates, times, weather conditions and a description of the shaking, with NBC Chicago on Wednesday.

A day earlier, McCook Mayor Jeffrey Tobolski and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-3rd) attended a private quarry council meeting in nearby Countryside. Quarry owner Material Services invited a large contingent of blasting experts who illustrated the seven-second gap between their "within limits" blast and the subsequent earthquake-like experience.

"We're not letting them off the hook," said Lipinski, who has requested a federal investigation into the event.

Lipinski said he was at his home in Western Springs when his house "shook like never before."

The next report on the event is expected to be revealed at the next quarry council meeting on Dec. 10 at the Countryside Village Hall.
