Thieves Use Skimmer to Get Away With $50,000 From Lincolnwood ATM

Surveillance video shows men affixing a devices to ATM at BMO Harris Bank branch on Sundays in April and May

Thieves got off with at least $50,000 from bank customers through the use of a skimming device placed on an ATM, police said.

Two men were recorded on surveillance video placing a device on the ATM of a BMO Harris Bank location at 6820 Lincoln Ave., officials said. Video shows the winter jacket and hat-clad men at the bank on the mornings of April 26 and May 3. In both instances, one of the men modified the ATM by placing a device on top of the card reader and affixing a small camera over the keypad. They then returned later on both days and collected the devices.

Both dates were Sundays when the bank  branch was closed to staffers.

A bank official said the customers who were affected have had their accounts fully reimbursed.

"We take the protection of our customers' accounts very seriously, and we make every effort to prevent fraud," BMO Harris Bank spokesman Patrick O'Herlihy said.

In January, police said a similar incident squeezed another $70,000 BMO Harris Bank customers.
