Leonys Martin Dashes Cardinals' Playoff Hopes With Incredible Play

The Chicago Cubs ended the St. Louis Cardinals' playoff hopes with a 2-1 win on Thursday night, and the way the game ended just added insult to injury for the Redbirds.

With two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, Paul DeJong smashed a long fly ball to center field. As the ball got near the fence, Cubs center fielder Leonys Martin made a leaping catch that stunned the Cardinals' bench and sent the Cubs home happy:

Not only was the catch a spectacular grab, but it also served as a massive dagger to the Cardinals. With the loss, St. Louis was officially eliminated from wild card contention, meaning that for the second year in a row the Cardinals won't qualify for the postseason.

Meanwhile the Cubs, who rested all of their regular starters for Thursday's game, will get to head home to Wrigley Field for a final three game series against the Cincinnati Reds before their postseason begins against the Washington Nationals next week.
