At least eight water spouts formed over Lake Michigan near the Chicago area on Wednesday, the National Weather Service confirmed.
Water spouts formed as early as 8:30 a.m. near the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood and Navy Pier and continued to form and dissipate into the afternoon, as late as about 3:30 p.m.
Waterspouts often form in conditions of light wind and typically move very little, according to the National Ocean Service. However, if a waterspout does move onto dry land the National Weather Service does issue a tornado warning due to the damage they spouts are capable of.
