Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant became the first Cub to hit a home run in the All-Star Game in nearly a decade, and he has one specific person to thank for the blast:

His dad.

That’s because Kris’ father Mike suggested that his son swing at the first pitch that he saw from Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale in Tuesday’s game, which saw the American League secure home field advantage in the World Series with a 4-2 victory at Petco Park.

“He said ‘first pitch fastball. Be ready for it,’” Bryant said after the game on Tuesday. “It’s like, ‘No dad, I’m going to take the first pitch.’ Obviously I should listen to my dad more.”

Bryant, who had struck out in his first six career plate appearances against Sale, took a first pitch fastball and deposited it into the left field bleachers to give the N.L. a 1-0 lead in the game. The home run, Bryant’s first hit in All-Star Game action, was the first Cubs long ball in the Midsummer Classic since Alfonso Soriano hit one during the 2007 game.

Bryant also became the first Cubs player under 25 to get a hit in an All-Star Game since Ryne Sandberg accomplished the feat in 1984, according to Christopher Kamka of Comcast SportsNet.
