Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited the Chicago-area on Wednesday, blasting the ACLU and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel for their stances on crime.
Sessions, who has been under fire by President Donald Trump recently, declined to comment on that situation during remarks to a law enforcement conference in suburban Waukegan, but blamed the ACLU and Emanuel for a recent spike in crime in the city.
“Accepting this status quo of death and crime because it's confined to a few neighborhoods not responsible or moral," Sessions said. "This storied city cannot capitulate to the violence."
Sessions blames a city policy change in the way police officers deal with potential suspects in the wake of the Laquan McDonald shooting and a lawsuit over the city’s “stop-and-frisk” policy in 2015.
The ACLU disputed Sessions’ assertions, saying that the Attorney General is arguing “that police officers are too scared to do their jobs if they have oversight.”
