Politician Assembles Rifle Blindfolded in Campaign Video

Senate hopeful says he volunteered to be an “extra gun” on an unarmored convoy in Afghanistan

A United States Army veteran who served in Afghanistan is running for US Senate blindfolded and armed with a rifle he can assemble in under 32 seconds.

Jason Kander, Missouri's secretary of state, can be seen in a campaign video posted to YouTube Thursday challenging Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who Kander is attempting to unseat, on gun issues.

“I’m Jason Kander and Sen. Blunt has been attacking me on guns,” Kander says in the video. “Well, in the Army, I learned how to use and respect my rifle.”

Kander, a Democrat, then says he volunteered to be an “extra gun” on an unarmored convoy in Afghanistan, has supported Second Amendment rights and believes in background checks “so the terrorists can’t get their hands on one of these,” he says over the audible clunks and snaps of the rifle being assembled.

“I approve this message,” Kander says, removing the blindfold and holding the rifle. “Because I’d like Sen. Blunt to do this.”

The National Rifle Association, who has endorsed Blunt, released a video last week saying Kander “refused” to defend Second Amendment rights.
