Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta will not pitch for the team on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field, but his status for the start of the postseason is still up in the air.

According to manager Joe Maddon, Arrieta will get Sunday’s start off to rest his hamstring, which he injured in a Labor Day game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Arrieta has made two starts since then, but after he admitted that he’d altered his delivery because of the ailment, Maddon said the decision was made to give him an extra day off.

“A real healthy Jake pitching like he can is very important,” Maddon said.

The question now facing the Cubs is when Arrieta will be available to pitch in the National League Division Series against the Washington Nationals. Maddon indicated that Arrieta will not be available for the first two games in the series, giving his hamstring extra time to heal.

Games 3 and 4 of the series are set for Oct. 9 and 10 at Wrigley Field, and Arrieta will likely get one of those starts.

The Cubs are also considering keeping all five of their starting pitchers on their postseason roster as insurance in case Arrieta can’t make his start. That would mean John Lackey, who many thought would be left off the roster, might make it after all.

The Cubs’ series against the Washington Nationals will begin on Oct. 6 when they take on the Nationals in Washington D.C. The game will air on TBS, and the start time is yet to be determined.
