An Illinois State Police trooper who was shot while executing a search warrant in East St. Louis Friday has died, officials say.
ISP confirmed the shooting around 7:30 a.m. Friday morning. The trooper was involved in executing a search warrant at a residence in the 1400 block of North 42nd Street in East St. Louis when shots rang out.
The trooper was identified as 33-year-old Nick Hopkins, a 10-year veteran of the Illinois State Police.
According to Acting Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly, Hopkins' fellow troopers performed CPR before he was taken to the hospital, and allowed his family "to see him one last time."
Hopkins was taken to Saint Louis University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:10 p.m.
"Trooper Hopkins laid down his life protecting the citizens of this state," Kelly said. "We are asking the public to respectfully give consideration to the family of Trooper Hopkins and the ISP while we continue to grieve and work through this tragedy."
Police say that three suspects were taken into custody at the scene. Investigators are still on scene collecting evidence.
