140 Frozen Turkeys Stolen From Illinois Market

Police said the haul was valued at more than $2,000

Police in southern Illinois launched an investigation after 140 frozen turkeys were stolen from a locked refrigerated trailer outside a meat market the week before Thanksgiving.

The thefts happened between Monday evening and when Schneider's Quality Meats and Catering in Waterloo opened on Tuesday morning. Waterloo Police Chief Jim Trantham said he was hopeful surveillance video would give officers more information in the case.

"I guess even thieves have Thanksgiving," market owner Mark Lengacher told the Belleville News-Democrat.

Lengacher said the thefts wouldn't ruin the holiday for his business because he has plenty of other turkeys to go around.

The Jenny-O brand turkeys weighed about 12 pounds each. Police said the haul was valued at more than $2,000.

Waterloo is in Monroe County about 25 miles south of St. Louis.
