2 Injured in Illinois State Police-Involved Shooting on Chicago's South Side

Two people were wounded in a police-involved shooting on Chicago's South Side Thursday night.

Illinois State Troopers were conducting a traffic stop around 8:30 p.m. at 77th and Vincennes Ave in the city's West Chatham neighborhood when they were flagged down by a cab driver, according to a release from ISP.

Two people were in the backseat, police said, and at least one of them was armed. Shots were fired when troopers encountered the armed suspect, and both people in the back were wounded, state police confirmed. A gun was recovered from the cab, according to the release.

The Chicago Fire Department initially said a state trooper was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition, but Illinois State Police later said the officer did not sustain any injuries, and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Jason Sledge, a man driving by the scene with his mom and dad, said he heard three shots and started recording with his phone. Footage shows flashing police lights and Sledge said he heard lots of screaming and yelling. He also said he saw officers trying to pull injured man out of back window of a cab.

Denise Sanders, another witness, said she also saw a man being pulled from the back of a cab.

“I mean I’m still shaking, I couldn’t believe that I had witnessed something like this happening.”

This was the second shooting involving the Illinois State Police in less than a week.
