Illinois Schools Make List of Nation's Best Public High Schools: Report

Two dozen schools in Illinois have been named among the top 500 public high schools in the country.

Newsweek released its annual ranking of the best public high schools in the country, rating thousands of high schools in the country based on their performance on state assessments, graduation rates, college readiness, and the percentage of students that are college bound. Among the 500 best, 24 of them were in Illinois.

Northside College Preparatory High School in Chicago was the highest ranking school in Illinois and the only school to crack the top ten, coming in at no. 8. 

New Trier Township High School in north suburban Winnetka followed behind, ranking 17th in the state. 

Also among some of the highest ranked Illinois schools were Hinsdale Central High School and Lake Forest High School, which ranked at no. 34 and no. 37 respectively.

The only other Chicago school on the list was Whitney Young Magnet High School, ranking 77th. 

In total, 24 Illinois schools ranked nationally on the list.

The top school in the country was the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia.
