Illinois Woman Rescued After Spending a Day Stuck in Mud

Amy Chitwood was rescued after a fisherman contacted police about what he thought was a dead body on the river bank

White County officials on Monday rescued a woman who spent more than a day trapped in mud near the Little Wabash River.

Thirty-nine-year-old Amy Chitwood of Carmi was rescued after a fisherman contacted police Sunday about what he thought was a dead body on the river bank.

Responders found Chittwood thigh-deep in mud. She had injured her hip and couldn't free herself, but she was conscious and alert, officials said.

"I wasn't sure what I was looking at. I saw the officers there and then I saw the woman move and then I was like, 'OK, this just got real,'" EMT Adam Allen told WSIL-TV, adding that it took crews about half an hour to free her.

Chittwood was treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
