Horse Gallops to Suburban Mall After Escaping Stable

A horse is back in its stable after a quick jaunt to a suburban mall on Saturday, according to police.

The horse escaped from the Glen Grove Equestrian Center near the intersection of Harms Road and Golf Road in suburban Morton Grove around 6 p.m. Saturday, according to the Skokie Police Department.

“She was having a moment,” said stable employee Paula McKinnon. “She got nervous and took off.”

The horse ended up visiting the Westfield Old Orchard shopping center, more than a mile east in neighboring Skokie.

“She decided to take a stroll,” said Frank Keener, a Skokie police sergeant. “I think she was looking to do a little shopping along Skokie Boulevard.”

Officers and the horse's owner were able to get the horse back on Skokie Blvd near Golf Road, according to police, who said the situation was under control pretty quickly.

Keener said it was only the third runaway horse he could recall in 20 years as a police officer.

It wasn’t the Skokie Police Department’s first wildlife encounter. Saturday’s chase came almost a year to the day after officers helped corral a boa constrictor found on a parkway.
