A West Side man has been charged for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident that killed a 75-year-old man last month in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Vance E. Baines, 38, of the 5400 block of West Washington Boulevard, was charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death, police announced Wednesday.

He had previously been ticketed for failure to reduce speed, driving without insurance and failure to give information following the April 1 crash in the 3400 block of West North Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Baines is accused of driving a vehicle that fatally struck 75-year-old Robert E. Deters about 8:10 p.m. April 1, authorities said.

Baines is expected to appear in bond court Thursday.
