Highland Park Team Confirms Trip to Florida

School board holds first meeting since cancellation of Arizona trip

Highland Park officials on Monday night confirmed plans for an alternative trip for the girls basketball team after the controversial decision to cancel a trip to Arizona.

About half the seats in the auditorium at Highland Park High School were filled at the first school board meeting since last week's decision.

Though the crowd remained civil, groups of people on both sides of the issue got into heated discussions outside the meeting room, the Chicago Tribune reported.

School board leaders say their decision to cancel the Arizona trip was not political, contending that the state's tough new immigration law could pose a safety problem.

The girls' basketball team will instead travel to Orlando, Fla., during their Christmas break for a basketball tournament.
