Harvey Police Find Illegal Weapons Arsenal in Home

Police received a tip about the weapons from authoritities in Ohio

Harvey police provided this photo of some of the weapons they said they recovered from the home.

Investigators in the south Chicago suburb of Harvey said someone planted a small arsenal of illegal weapons in a basement of a home there. Who did it remained a mystery late Thursday.

The home near Cooper Avenue and 155th Place was searched with the homeowner's consent Thursday morning after police received a tip from authorities in Ohio, Harvey spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado.

Police found a Romanian AK-47, a Saiga .410 and a Hi-point 9 mm, Alvarado said. They also found a Masterpiece Arms .45 -- a type of automatic machine gun -- as well as Taurus .44 and Ruger .44 handguns.

Authorities also found more than 500 rounds of ammunition, Alvarado said.

Harvey investigators said they believe the 54-year-old woman who lived at the home doesn't own the weapons and may have not even known they were in the house.

No one had been charged as of Thursday night, but police in both Harvey and Marion, Ohio, said they were continuing their investigation.
