Salon Robber Hits Niles Hair Cuttery

Same man is believed to have robbed a number of hair salons throughout the area since the beginning of the year

A hair salon in northwest suburban Niles was open but kept its doors locked Monday afternoon after being robbed by an armed man just before midday.

The man entered the Hair Cuttery, in the 8200 block of West Golf Road, at about 11:35 a.m., Niles police Sgt. Robert Tarnabene said.

The chain's district manager told NBC Chicago the four employees inside the store thought the man was a client when he walked inside. Socorro Cepeda said the man never showed a gun but indicated he had one and demanded money. The employees quickly handed over, she said.

"It was like a one minute thing. They said he didn't look like he wanted to hurt anyone. He took the money and ran out," said customer Chirag Shah.

No one was injured but the employees were said to be "shaken" by the incident.

Surveillance footage from the store was turned over to police.

The same man is believed to have robbed a number of hair salons throughout the area since the beginning of the year. Salons in Skokie, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Morton Grove and Chicago have all been hit, police say.

Surveillance cameras recorded a Jan. 3 heist in Skokie.

Authorities said they're looking for a man in his 30s who stands about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds. The robber was last seen wearing black sunglasses and a black hooded jacket.
