Girl Expelled for Setting Boy's Hair on Fire

Girl sprayed boy with perfume, sparked lighter

A suburban Chicago school district has expelled an eighth-grade girl for allegedly setting a younger student's hair on fire during a bus ride earlier this month.

Forest Ridge School District 142 Superintendent Margaret Longo confirmed the board's action Monday.

Longo said the girl, who was a student at Hille Middle School in Oak Forest, reportedly sprayed a sixth grade boy with perfume on the bus March 3 and then pulled out a cigarette lighter and began sparking it. Some of the perfume caught on fire, singeing the boy's hair and jacket, the Southtown Star reported.

Longo said options for families of expelled students are to hire a tutor, home school or apply for acceptance to a private school.

Oak Forest police said the girl was not charged criminally.
