Employee Dies After Shooting at South Side Gas Station

Gas station attendant in his 40s was shot in his side during an apparent robbery at a BP store in the Canaryville neighborhood

A gas station employee is dead after being shot during a robbery Saturday afternoon on the South Side.

The attendant -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as 31-year-old Jo Jo James -- was shot in the side during an armed robbery at the BP gas station in the 4300 block of South State Street, police said.

Paramedics initially took the man in serious to critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. James, of the 4800 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:58 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Officers were called to the gas station for a robbery-in-progress and found the man wounded, said police spokesman John Mirabelli.

The medical examiner’s office said he was shot multiple times.

The robbers fled with cash from the register and other items from the business, police said.

Detectives were hoping to retrieve surveillance video, police said.

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating, but nobody was in custody as of Saturday night.
