Former President Obama Thanks Chance the Rapper for Charitable Efforts

Chance the Rapper had a busy Saturday, as the musician served as the Grand Marshal of the Bud Billiken Parade and then hosted a free concert at the Auditorium Theatre at Roosevelt University.

At that concert, Chance was thanked for his efforts by a very special guest: former President Barack Obama:

“I felt obliged to say congratulations to you on being the grand marshal of the Bud Billiken Parade,” Obama said in a pre-recorded message. “We want to make sure that we are nurturing and protecting and encouraging and loving the next generation of leaders all throughout the city of Chicago. So Chance, I’m grateful for everything that you’ve done on behalf of the young people back home.”

The former president, who now lives in Washington D.C., will base his new Obama Foundation in Chicago, while his presidential library will be housed at the University of Chicago.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure you have safe streets, strong schools, a loving community, and one that encourages you to achieve all of your potential,” he said.

Chance served as the grand marshal of the Billiken parade on Saturday morning, and along the way he handed out 30,000 free backpacks that were stuffed with school supplies for area students.

Later in the day, the musician went around the Chicago area and handed out free tickets to a concert at the Auditorium Theatre, using social media to keep fans apprised of where he was at in the city.
